GRAN, Moisei Markovich (born in 1867), professor of the department of social hygiene at Kazan State University since 1928, prominent public figure. He began his scientific work in the 3rd year on physiology ('On the suction activity of the heart') under N. O. Kovalevsky and in the 5th year under Bekhterev on the topic 'Psychometric studies in healthy and sick individuals' (university gold medal). After graduating from Kazan University in 1893, he became a sanitary doctor in the Samara provincial zemstvo. In 1896, he was appointed head of the Sanitary Bureau of the provincial zemstvo. After the 1905 revolution, he was forced to leave zemstvo service and moved to St. Petersburg, where he worked in the city administration. In 1912, Gran was one of the initiators and organizers of OZE (Society for Jewish Health). From the beginning of the war in 1914, he worked in the Zemstvo and City Unions, and from October 1917 - in the NKZdr. (first in Leningrad, in later years - in Moscow). Gran was an active participant in the Pirogov congresses. At the Pirogov congress in 1917, Gran was elected as a representative to the Central State Medical-Sanitary Council. In 1921, as chairman of the 'Commission for Assistance to the Starving NKZdr.', he participated in the survey of starving provinces of the Volga region. Gran was chairman of the 'Commission for the Study of the Health Consequences of War at NKZdr.'. In 1922, on a mission from NKZdr., he traveled to Europe to mobilize medical aid for Soviet Russia in connection with the famine. Since 1925, Gran was assistant professor at the department of social hygiene of 1st MSU; until 1928 he worked at the NKZdr. institute for the study of occupational diseases (clinic of social and occupational diseases of 1st MSU). Gran published over 50 printed works on public medicine, sanitary statistics, epidemiology, social pathology and occupational pathology, as well as a number of popular brochures. Gran was a prominent worker in the organization of people's universities in the 1890s and editor of the 'Bulletin of People's Universities' (St. Petersburg, 1910-14), co-editor of the journal 'Questions of Biology and Pathology of Jews' (Leningrad, since 1926) and several sanitary-hygienic journals.
