Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

LAMY, Guillaume (Guillaume Lamy), French physician of the 17th century, lived in Paris. He received his doctorate in 1672. Lamy is among the unjustly forgotten materialists of the 17th century. Like the philosopher Gassendi, Lamy attempted in his book «De principiis rerum» (v. I-III, P., 1669) to revive the system of Epicurus and Lucretius. He also authored the works: «Discours anatomiques» (P., 1677) and «Explication mecanique et physique des fonctions de l'ame sensitive» (P., 1677). A consistent mechanical-materialist viewpoint is maintained in all of Lamy's works. He was repeatedly quoted by La Mettrie.
