Summary
Hemiathetosis and hemichorea are forms of athetosis or chorea that affect only one half of the body. In adults, they are rare and may precede or follow hemiplegia, whereas in infantile hemiplegias, athetosis is a very common phenomenon where symptoms of paralysis often take a back seat to hyperkinesia.
Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
HEMIATHETOSIS, HEMICHOREA, athetosis or chorea (see), spreading to only one half of the body. In rare cases, hemiathetosis and hemichorea develop in adults, joining hemiplegia (chorea posthemiplegica) or preceding it (chorea praehemiplegica). In infantile hemiplegias, athetosis represents the most common phenomenon, wherein the phenomena of paralysis proper often recede into the background in comparison with hyperkinesia.
