KORTE Werner (Werner Korte, born in 1853), prominent German surgeon. Almost all of K.'s activity took place outside academic work in the hospitals of Berlin, where with his brilliant works and broad erudition he quickly gained worldwide fame, placing him today among the foremost figures of modern scientific and practical surgery. The majority of Korte's works relate to various departments of abdominal surgery. Among them, brilliant monographs on the surgery of the bile ducts, pancreas, and peritoneum are considered classical. K. serves as an active editor of most German surgical journals and as the editor-in-chief of Archiv fur klinische Chirurgie. For many years he has been chairman of the Berlin Surgical Society, an honorary member of the German Surgical Society, and chairman of the surgical congresses in 1906 and 1926. In recognition of K.'s services to German surgery, the last surgical congress in 1930 elected him honorary chairman (an honor last bestowed only on Langenbeck). K.'s principal works: "Beitrag zur Lehre vom runden Magengeschwiir" (Diss., Strassburg, 1875); "Die chirurgischen Krankheiten und die Verletzungen des Pankreas" (Stuttgart, 1898); "Beitrage zur Chirurgie der Gallenwege und der Leber" (Berlin, 1905); a series of chapters on abdominal surgery in Handbook of Practical Surgery, ed. by E.
