LATERAL, lateralis (from Latin latus - side), lateral, anatomical term, defining the position of any part of the body or part of an organ in relation to their median plane (the correlative term is medial). Examples: L., or the transverse axis of the body - located perpendicular to the median plane of the body; L. side of the body - lying at the end of the L. axis; L. line - the lateral line of fish; ventriculus lateralis - the lateral ventricle of the brain; corpus geniculatum laterale - the lateral geniculate body; musculus rectus capitis lateralis - the rectus lateralis muscle of the head; angulus oculi lateralis - the lateral angle of the eye; norma lateralis - in anthropology, an image of the skull from the side with a specific setting. Dorso- and ventro-lateral - located on or in the direction of the lateral part of the back or abdomen.
