LUBARSCH Otto (Otto Lubarsch, b. 1860), outstanding German pathologist. Graduated from the medical faculty in Strasbourg in 1883; was an assistant at the physiological institute in Bern, and later at the pathological institutes of Giessen and Zurich. In 1894 he was elected professor of pathological anatomy in Rostock. In 1894-1904 he headed the pathological department of the hygiene institute in Posen, in 1905-07 he was director of the pathological institute in Zwickau, in 1907-13-director of the pathological institute in Düsseldorf, in 1913-17-professor of pathology and director of the pathological institute in Kiel, in 1917-29-professor and director of the Virchow pathological institute in Berlin. In 1923-26 he served as dean of the medical faculty of Berlin University.-L. is known as an outstanding educator and as a scientist with vast erudition not only in pathology, but also in related disciplines. More than 300 scientific works by L. deal with the most diverse questions of pathology, in each of which he brought significant clarity through his research. These include Lubarsch's works on congenital and acquired immunity, tumors, inflammation, tuberculosis, lymphogranulomatosis, gastric achylia, and many others. Of greatest importance are his research on the formation of hyalin and amyloid, on pathological pigmentations, and on the pathological anatomy of the spleen. L.'s publishing and editorial activity is extremely broad: since 1917 Lubarsch has been responsible editor of "Virchows Archiv f. pathologische Anatomie und Physiologie"; in 1896 he founded together with Ostertag a periodical publication entitled "Die Ergebnisse d. allgem. Pathologie und pathol. Anatomie des Menschen und der Tiere" (Munich), which is still being published. Together with F. Henke, Lubarsch organized the publication of the largest collective guide on pathological anatomy ("Handbuch d. speziellen path. Anatomie u. Histologie", B., since 1924), 15 volumes of which have already been published. In 1923 L. participated in the All-Russian Congress of Pathologists in Leningrad, and in 1930-in the All-Union Congress of Pathologists in Baku. In his political views, L. is a representative of the extreme right direction.
