Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
Noviform, Noviform (CeBr4O2)2Bi(OH), a basic tetrabromo-resorcin-bismuth. It is obtained by precipitating an acidic solution of nitro-bismuth salt with an alkaline solution of tetrabromo-resorcin. Noviform is a grayish-yellow powder without odor, insoluble in water, alcohol, and ether. Noviform can be sterilized at t° 100° without decomposition. The pharmacological significance of Noviform lies in its antiseptic action, which depends on the resorcin, bromine, and bismuth it contains. Noviform is used in the form of 10% and 20% ointments in surgical and venereal practice as a non-irritating, non-toxic antisepticum, acting quite similarly to the xeroform it replaces. Contains 32% Bi2O3.
