Summary
This article describes the Soviet 'List A' of poisonous substances requiring special storage and dispensing regulations in pharmacies, including specific handling requirements and the complete list of substances classified under this category.
Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)
A, in the pharmacopoeia, denotes the list of poisonous substances for which special storage and dispensing regulations exist, unlike potent and all other medications. All poisonous medicinal substances listed in 'List A' must be stored (both in the prescription room and in other pharmacy premises) under lock, separately from other medicinal substances. The cabinets and drawers in which they are stored must be labeled: 'Veil epa' (poisons). When prescribing a poisonous substance in a dose exceeding the maximum single dose, the physician must indicate the quantity of this substance in writing with an exclamation mark added. If this requirement is not met and it is impossible to consult with the physician, the pharmacy dispenses the substance in a dose corresponding to half of the maximum single dose. In prescriptions containing poisonous substances, the method of administration must be specified. Without such indication, the medicine shall not be dispensed. Medicines containing poisonous substances in their composition cannot be dispensed repeatedly based on the signature without the physician's signature. The following substances are included in 'List A': Acidum arsenicosum, Aconitinum crystallisatum, Adrenalinum hydrochloricum solutum (1 : 1000), Apomorphinum hydrochloricum, Arecolinum hydrobromicum, Atropinum sulfuricum, Cocainum hydrochloricum, Diacetylmorphinum hydrochloricum, Homatropinum hydrobromicum, Hydrargyrum amidato-bichloratum, Hydrargyrum bichloratum, Hydrargyrum bijodatum, Hydrargyrum cyanatum, Hydrargyrum oxycyanatum, Hydrargyrum oxydatum rubrum, Hydrargyrum oxydatum flavum, Hydrargyrum salicylicum, Liquor kalii arsenicosi, Morphium hydrochloricum, Narcophinum, Natrium arsenicicum, Natrium kakodylicum, Neosalvarsanum, Nitroglycerinum, Pantoponum, Phosphorus, Physostigminum salicylicum, Pilocarpinum hydrochloricum, Scopolaminum hydrobromicum, Strophanthinum crystallisatum (G), Strychninum nitricum, Veratrinum.
