Summary

Stanislaus von Prowazek (1875-1915) was a zoologist specializing in protistology who published over 200 works on parasitic protozoa, including research on Plasmodiophora brassicae, trichomonads, trypanosomes, and trachoma. He created the concept of Chlamydozoa-Strongyioplasmata and died from typhus, which he studied and in which he discovered formations later named 'Rickettsia Prowazeki'.

PROWAZEK Stanislaus (St. von Prowazek, 1875-1915), zoologist, primarily a protistologist. Published over 200 specialized works and popular science articles. Is known mainly for his works on parasitic protozoa, such as his research on Plasmodiophora brassicae—the causative agent of cabbage clubroot (1905), works on trichomonads (1904), on trypanosomes (1905), as well as on trachoma. P. created the concept of the group Chlamydozoa-Strongyioplasmata (1907-08)—intracellular inclusions observed in foci of infection in filterable viruses (trachoma, smallpox, rabies, etc.); according to P., these inclusions consist of the virus itself and of products of the cellular reaction to its introduction. Among P.'s works of theoretical significance, his research on sexual reproduction in protozoa and on their nuclear structure should be noted. To P.'s credit are: the well-known introduction to the physiology of protozoa ('Einfuhrung in die Physiologie der Einzeb ligen', Lpz., 1910) and the repeatedly republished pocket guide to protistological technique ('Taschenbuch der mikroskopischen Technik der Protistenuntersuchung', Lpz., 1922; Russian ed.-M., 1925). P. was the founder and editor of the comprehensive collective guide to pathogenic protozoa ('Handbuch der pathogenen Protozoen', hrsg. v. S. v. Prowazek, fortgefuhrt v. W. Noller, B. I-III, Lpz., 1912-29). In 1907-18, P. edited 'Archiv fur Protistenkunde' (Jena).-Died of typhus, which he studied and in which he discovered in lice formations that were later named 'Rickettsia Prowazeki' (Da Rocha-Lima).
