FRENKEL, Semyon Romanovich (born in 1875), a prominent radiologist. He entered the medical faculty of Kiev University, from which he was dismissed for participating in the student Vetrova demonstration. He graduated from Kharkov University in 1898. During the first years of his medical activity, he lived in the city of Uman, Kiev Province. For participating in the 1905 revolution, he was imprisoned. After his release from prison, he was elected as a member of the 1st State Duma, and after its dissolution, he was again imprisoned and brought to trial for distributing illegal literature among the peasants. He was sentenced to two years of imprisonment in a fortress. He served this sentence in the city of Uman (1908–1910). In 1911, he went abroad, where he studied radiology for about 3 years under Levy-Dorn, as well as under other specialists in Berlin, Vienna, Paris, and Hamburg. After the October Revolution, Frenkel began energetic medical activity. For 15 years, he has served as the head of the radiology department of the Kremlin Hospital and the head of the radiology and radiological departments of the Central Oncological Institute. At present, he is also a professor of radiology at the First Moscow Medical Institute. As a founder of the Moscow Society of Radiologists, Frenkel was its chairman and has been a member of its board almost continuously. In addition, Frenkel is a member of the presidium of the All-Union Association of Radiologists and the chairman of the Russian Society of Radiologists. Being a participant in all radiological congresses, Frenkel delivered a large number of reports at their meetings on various issues of radiology and on the treatment of malignant tumors with X-rays and radium. Frenkel also participated with his reports at international congresses of radiology and radiology in London, Stockholm, and Zurich. Frenkel has published 47 printed scientific works. Among them, the following should be noted: “Uber Encephalographie”; “Uber die Wirkung der isolierten Blutbestrahlung auf die Zelle”; “Uber den Einfluss der Rontgenstrahlen auf d. Zellplasma”; “Uber die Roentgenbehandlung der chirurg. entzundl. Vorgange”; “Latest methods of surgical X-ray diagnostics”; “Die Encephalographie bei psychischen und Nervenkrankheiten des Kindes- und Sauglingsalters”; “A thousand cases of intravenous pyelography,” etc. Frenkel is a co-editor of the Great Medical Encyclopedia for radiology and the editor of “Soviet Radiology”.
