THELITIS (thelitis), inflammation of the nipple of the mammary gland. It is most frequently observed in connection with nipple fissures associated with nursing. Usually thelitis is superficial, but sometimes it is deeper, purulent, and accompanied by inflammation of the areolar (Montgomery's) glands. In some cases, thelitis presents the picture of mastitis, specifically inflammation of the subareolar tissue and the development of a subareolar abscess.
