YAKOVLEV Viktor Il'ich (1860-1927), outstanding bacteriologist, epidemiologist, and major specialist in public sanitation. After graduating from the Military Medical Academy in 1890 and serving briefly as a military physician, he joined in 1892 as an ordinatory at the St. Petersburg City Aleksandrovskaya Hospital for laborers. In 1895 he was appointed head of the newly established bacteriological department of the City Laboratory, which he not only organized but soon brought to the level of a fully scientific institution in the fields of epidemiology and sanitation. No question in this field was developed or resolved in the city without authoritative participation [Yakovlev]. Yakovlev followed the literature of his specialty with amazing precision, making detailed notes about it in the famous 'Yakovlev notebooks.' Based on these notebooks and his phenomenal memory, he thoroughly instructed not only young but also experienced specialists who turned to him, including I. I. Mechnikov, who remained on friendly terms with Yakovlev until his death. Over decades, the 'Yakovlev School' was formed from local and visiting specialists who benefited from his detailed explanations and advice. After the revolution, Yakovlev taught at the Clinical Institute for Advanced Medical Studies, as well as at the 2nd Polytechnic Institute and at the Institute of Civil Engineers.
