Dembo, Grigory Isaakovich (b. 1872), a prominent figure in the field of public health, sanitation, and social hygiene. He graduated from Moscow University in 1896, and in 1902 defended his dissertation on "Complications in preventive vaccination" (St. Petersburg, 1902). From 1902 for 20 years, he served as a sanitary physician in St. Petersburg. In 1922-1927, he held leadership positions in the People's Commissariat of Health of the Turkmen Republic and in the Leningrad health department. An active worker in several public organizations (commissions: for the study of alcoholism under the Russian Society for Health Protection, for the fight against tuberculosis, for the fight with infant mortality). He worked in many periodic medical publications as an editor. In 1917, he was chairman of the All-Russian Society of Army and Fleet Physicians, and later - head of the Petrograd Union of Physicians and the physicians' section of the Medical Labor Union. From 1928, he was a professor of social hygiene at the Leningrad Medical Institute. Throughout his career, D. wrote extensively on various public health issues.
