Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
ZOOSPORES (synonyms: "wanderers", German Schwärmer, Schwarmsporen), microscopic motile individuals formed by asexual reproduction (sporulation, schizogony) in Protozoa or Protophyta. Some apply this term only to the corresponding flagellated stages (flagellospora) of algae, while others use it in relation to amoeboid elements. In a broad sense, zoospores are not only the products of schizogony (merozoites) but also of sporogony (sporozoites).
