ARGASIDAE, a family of ticks (Ixodoidea) consisting of two genera, Argas and Ornithodoros, which are of great importance in medicine and veterinary science (see Ticks, Ornithodoros). Representative species: Argas persicus (Persian tick), which in the USSR extends north as far as Saratov and is commonly found in the south (Caucasus, Turkestan). It is a vector of spirochetosis in chickens and other birds. It may also attack humans.
