BACHERACHT, Andrei Gavrilovich (Heinrich Bacheracht), prominent Russian military physician of the 18th century. After graduating from the University of Leiden, in 1751 he was appointed doctor to the Corps of Main Artillery and Fortification 'for the treatment of generals, officers and soldiers'. B. participated in the development of a project for the construction of an extensive hospital in Kronstadt; in his report presented to the Medical Collegium in 1797, B. protested against huge hospitals, calling them large cemeteries, and proposed to set up 4 different hospitals at a distance from each other, 'on elevated places, far from residential houses, on the outskirts of the city, near running water'.
