Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)
Biedl, Arthur, known endocrinologist, professor of experimental pathology and director of the Institute of Experimental Pathology at the German University in Prague. In the 1890s, he was an assistant to Striecker (S. Striecker) in Vienna, where he received experimental pathological and physiological training. From 1899 to 1914, he was extraordinary professor of pathological physiology at the University of Vienna; in 1914, he moved to Prague. Initially, he worked on various issues in pathology, among other things, anaphylaxis and experimental atherosclerosis; later, he almost completely concentrated on developing questions in the field of endocrinology. A list of B.'s numerous works in this field until 1922 is given by him in Volume III of the 4th edition of his classic work: "Innere Sekretion, ihre physio logischen Grundlagen und ihre Bedeutung fur die Pathologie" (Berlin-Wien, Urban u. Schwarzenberg, 1922). However, only volumes I and III have been published from this edition (the latter is entirely devoted to literature). A Russian translation of the second edition of this work is also available (published by "Prakticheskaya meditsina", 1914).
