BOGOMOLETS, Alexander Alexandrovich (born in 1881), professor of pathological physiology at the 2nd Moscow State University. After graduating from the medical faculty in Odessa (1906), B. until 1911 was an assistant and privat-docent at the department of general pathology; from 1911 he was professor at the same department at Saratov University. In 1925 he was elected to Moscow. B. and his school are the authors of a large number of works on internal secretion, summarized in B.'s monograph "The Crisis of Endocrinology" (Moscow, 1927). B. established the lipoid nature of the secretions of the adrenal cortex. In a series of works on immunity, B. established the enzymatic nature of immunity and anaphylaxis reactions and the unity of antibodies. B. is also the author of a number of works on blood circulation, neuromuscular fatigue, and the experimental study of cancer. He developed the question of the role of the "physiological system of connective tissue" in the phenomena of immunity and neoplasia and proposed a new ("mesenchymal") classification of constitutions (see his "Introduction to the Doctrine of Constitutions", 2nd ed., Moscow, 1928). In the monograph "On the Vegetative Centers of Exchange" he developed the theory of peripheral regulation of bodily functions. B. wrote a course on "Pathological Physiology" (2 volumes, 2nd ed., Moscow, 1924).
