Ernst Bumm (1858-1925) was a prominent German gynecologist and bacteriologist who specialized in gonorrhea and postpartum infections. He authored the influential obstetrics textbook 'Grundriss zum Studium der Geburts-hilfe' which went through 15 editions in German and was translated into Russian.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

Bumm, Ernst (1858-1925), one of the outstanding German gynecologists of modern times, a student of Scanzoni. In 1894 he received a chair in Zurich, in 1900 in Halle, and in 1904 in Berlin, first at Charite, and from 1910 he headed the university clinic. Bumm was one of the first to study bacteriology in its application to gynecology. Gonorrhea of the female reproductive system and postpartum infections were areas where he worked particularly productively. Bumm was an exceptionally talented teacher. textbook on obstetrics, illustrated with a large number of original artistic drawings ('Grundriss zum Studium der Geburts-hilfe', Wiesbaden, 1st ed.-1902, 14th and 15th ed.-1922). This textbook went through 15 editions in German and was published many times in Russian. After Bumm's death, the general part of operative gynecology was published, also beautifully illustrated ('Operative Gynakologie', Munich, 1926, translated into Russian).
