Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
STOECKEL Walter (Walter Stoeckel; 1871), an outstanding contemporary German gynecologist. He received his medical education in Leipzig, Munich, Jena, and Königsberg. He specialized with Fritsch, Veit, and Bumm. In 1907 he received a professorship in Marburg, in 1910 he moved to Kiel, in 1922 to Leipzig, and in 1926 to Berlin to the chair vacated by Bumm's death. Among Stoeckel's original works, his works on gynecological urology, which he to some extent created, are particularly important, but he is also an outstanding specialist in other branches of gynecology and obstetrics. An excellent teacher, Stoeckel wrote textbooks on obstetrics and gynecology, translated into Russian: "Fundamentals of Obstetrics" (Vol. I-II, Moscow-Leningrad, 1933) and "Gynecology" (Moscow-Leningrad, 1934). Under Stoeckel's editorship, Veit's "Handbook of Gynecology" is currently being published in its 3rd edition. He also, as Fritsch's successor, edits the most widely distributed gynecological journal: "Zentralblatt für Gynäkologie".
