Schauta Friedrich (Friedrich Schauta; 1849-1919), an outstanding Austrian obstetrician and gynecologist of recent times. He received his medical education in Vienna and specialized there. In 1881 he obtained a professorship in Innsbruck, in 1887 he moved to Prague, and in 1891 to Vienna, where he remained until his death. Schauta's youth coincided with the beginning of the flourishing of operative gynecology, and in turn he contributed to this flourishing by perfecting new operative techniques and proposing valuable methods of operating, including vaginal ones ["interpositio uteri" - Wertheim-Schauta operation (S. A. Aleksandrova); operation of "expanded" excision of cancer-transformed uterus through the vagina; operation of urinary fistulas with periosteal detachment]. An excellent teacher, Schauta attracted physicians from all countries to his clinic and created a school from which many outstanding specialists emerged. Of Schauta's literary works, the once popular "Lehrbuch der gesammten Gynaekologie" (Lpz.-Wien, 1st ed., 1895-1897; 3rd ed., 1906-07) can be mentioned. In Russian translation were published: "Outline of the foundations of operative obstetrics for practical physicians and students" (St. Petersburg, 1885) and "Textbook of obstetrics" (St. Petersburg, 1909).
