BURDENKO, Nikolai Nilovich, born in 1878. Graduated from the University of Tartu in 1906/07. During the Russo-Japanese War, he worked in a field surgical detachment under the leadership of Professor Tsegel-Manteifel, in whose clinic he subsequently completed his internship and assistantship. After which he was sent abroad for advanced studies, where for two years he worked in various clinics in Germany, Switzerland, and France. In addition to surgical clinics, B. studied a number of issues in clinics for nervous diseases, dealing with questions of topical diagnosis from a surgical point of view (in the clinics of Krause, Oppenheim). In 1910 he was elected Privatdozent in surgery, and in 1911 - professor of the department of operative surgery at the University of Tartu. From the beginning of the imperialist war, he worked as a consulting surgeon on various fronts. In March 1917, the Provisional Government appointed him to the position of Chief Military Sanitary Inspector, in which position he remained until June 1917; in November 1917 he was elected to the department of faculty surgical clinic of the University of Tartu and remained in this position even after the university moved to Voronezh. In 1922 he was elected to the department of operative surgery and topographic anatomy, and in 1924 to the department of faculty surgical clinic of the 1st Moscow State University, which position he holds at the present time. He is a member of the State Scientific Medical Council, editor of the Surgical Department of the Great Medical Encyclopedia, responsible editor of the 'Bulletin of Contemporary Surgery', and one of the three editors of the Medical Department of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia. Among B.'s works on various issues of clinical and experimental surgery, the most important are works on surgery of the central and peripheral nervous system, experimental studies on the etiology of gastric round ulcer, the application of the Besredka method in the surgical clinic, and many others.
