Cytovich Mitrofan Feofanovich (born in 1869), outstanding Russian otorhinolaryngologist. He received his specialized education at the clinic of N. P. Simanovsky (Military Medical Academy). In 1914, he was elected professor at Saratov University, where he headed the clinic he organized until 1930, when he moved to the position of director of the Institute of Physiology of the Upper Respiratory Tracts and Ears, which was established at his initiative. In the person of Cytovich, Russian otology has a major scientist who created an original school. Cytovich not only introduced a number of innovations from abroad to Russian soil but is also the author of a significant number of new developments concerning operative and diagnostic techniques. For two decades, Cytovich persistently and successfully developed the problem of the tonsil and questions of physiology of the upper respiratory tracts. The combination of qualities of a major clinician with extensive laboratory technique allowed Cytovich not only to raise but also to resolve a number of theoretical problems. Particularly much has been done by Cytovich's school on the question of the significance for the organism of the upper segment of the respiratory tracts, the tonsillar apparatus, on the question of the lymphatic system of this department. Organizational abilities allowed Cytovich to create a clinic and institute in a peripheral university, where a large number of physicians gather. Cytovich is a major educator. Through the works of Cytovich, the Saratov Otological Society was created, of which he was the permanent chairman; Cytovich is an honorary member of a number of scientific societies. Cytovich has about 150 scientific works. His textbook, published in 1922, is one of the best Russian guides for students and physicians.
