GONADS, or sex glands, are glands that produce reproductive cells (the generative function of the gonads) and sex hormones (the endocrine function of the gonads). (For the comparative anatomy and embryology of the gonads, see Urogenital organs.) The male gonads are called testes (see) or testicles, and the female gonads are called ovaries (see).
