HAGER, Hermann (Hermann Hager, 1816-1897), renowned pharmacist, Doctor of Philosophy; at the age of 16, he became an apprentice in an apothecary in Salzwedel; after completing his pharmaceutical education and passing the state examination, he initially worked as a practitioner, while continuing to engage in science and literary work. In 1860, H. moved to Berlin and devoted himself entirely to scientific and literary activity in the field of pharmacy; he founded the journal 'Pharmaceutische Centralhalle', which he edited for 20 years. At the same time, he participated in the publication of 'Industrieblatter' (Industrial Gazette). Among the numerous works on scientific and practical pharmacy left by Hager, his classic commentaries on the German pharmacopoeias ('Kommentar zum Arzneibuch für das deutsche Reich', Berlin, 1895-1896) are particularly well-known, followed by 'Hagers Handbuch der pharmazeutischen Praxis', which in the latest edition was published in two volumes in 1925 and 1927 (Russian edition - 'Rukovodstvo k farmatsevticheskoi i mediko-khirurgicheskoi praktike', vols. I-V, St. Petersburg, 1888-94, supplementary volume, St. Petersburg, 1903). In addition, the following are well-known: 'Pharmazeutisch-technisches Manual' (Leipzig-Berlin, 1902-03); 'Das Mikroskop und seine Anwendung' (Berlin, 1912); 'Anleitung zur Fabrikation künstlicher Mineralwasser' (Breslau, 1870). 'Hager's Commentary' continues to be republished to the present day, appearing under the editorship of Fischer and Hartwig (B. Fischer, C. Hartwig). In a corresponding revision by I. I. Kalnin, adapted to the 4th edition of the Russian Pharmacopoeia, it was also published in Moscow in 1893-95 in 2 volumes, and in 1889 a five-volume edition was published under the editorship of Professor Pely and Professor Anrep, completed by Dr. Ivanov (1891-95).
