INOZEMTSEV, Fedor Ivanovich (1802-69), a well-known physician and professor at Moscow University, who played a prominent role in Russian medical life in the mid-19th century. After graduating from the medical faculty of Kharkov University in 1828, and after examinations at the Academy of Sciences, I. was admitted to the professorial institute at Dorpat University, where he again attended the full course of the medical faculty, and in 1833, after defending a dissertation on lithotomy by the bilateral method, received the degree of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery. In 1833, I. was sent abroad for 2 years; upon his return (1835), he was appointed extraordinary professor of practical surgery at Moscow University, and in 1837, ordinary professor and director of the clinic, where he remained until 1859. I. was one of the popular professors of his time not only as a surgeon but also as a therapist. With his lectures, I. attracted students and young doctors, had numerous students (among them - S. P. Botkin). I. played a major role in the public life of medical circles in Moscow, being one of the founders of the Society of Russian Physicians in Moscow, contributing to the opening of medical societies in other cities, and being one of the initiators of the convening of congresses of natural scientists and physicians. I. published and edited the Moscow Medical Gazette (1858-62). I. left more than 40 printed works on various medical topics (stone disease, hydrocele of the testicle, erysipelas, cholera, rheumatism, diseases of the nervous system, etc.).
