Payr Erwin (Erwin Payr, born 1871), a leading contemporary German surgeon. P.'s works cover various fields of surgery. He achieved world fame through his numerous brilliant studies on joint pathology and especially the methods of arthroplasty and mobilization of ankylosed joints developed by him, which are now almost universally accepted; these works were published in German surgical journals; of P.'s numerous works (about 150) in other areas of clinical surgery, his monograph on appendicitis (in the series "Diagnostische u. therapeutische Irrtümer", ed. by J. Schwalbe, Surgery section, No. 8, Leipzig, 1926) is particularly valuable. Together with gynecologist R. Zweifel, he published the extensive collective textbook "Die Klinik der bösartigen Geschwülste" (Vol. I-III, Leipzig, 1924-27). Together with H. Küttner, he is editor of the monumental periodic publication "Ergebnisse der Chirurgie und Orthopädie" (Berlin, since 1910). As an author, he participated in several major collective textbooks of the last two decades. Professor of surgery in Leipzig. Chairman of the 53rd Congress of German Surgeons in 1929.
