SLOVTSOV Boris Ivanovich (1874-1924), a prominent biologist and chemist, son of a natural science teacher. He graduated from the Military Medical Academy in 1897. As a student, he wrote a work for which he received a gold medal. Upon graduating from the academy, he was left in the laboratory of Professor Danilevsky for three years to improve his skills: in 1899, he defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Medicine. He was sent on a two-year mission abroad. Upon returning to St. Petersburg, he became an assistant professor of physiological chemistry. From 1910-12, S. was a professor of pharmacology at the Saratov University. From 1912 until his death, he was a professor of physiological chemistry at the Women's Medical Institute (1st Leningrad Medical Institute). From 1919, he was the head of the biochemical department of the Veterinary Laboratory, gave individual lecture courses at various educational institutions and other institutions in Petrograd. S.'s work and interests are extremely diverse and numerous; he wrote over 100 different works: essays, reviews, monographs, textbooks, and experimental works. From the individual areas in which he worked, it is worth noting: the study of the influence of rennet enzyme on proteins, works on metabolism, immunity, and asphyxiating gases. In recent years, he actively engaged in questions of nutrition and the chemistry of the brain. S. is known as an active public figure who participated in studies and improvements of public nutrition.
