LIKHACHEV Alexey Alekseyevich (b. 1866), known pharmacologist; graduated from the Military Medical Academy in 1890 and was retained for further study at the department of general pathology under Academician V. V. Pashutin. During a foreign assignment, he worked under the guidance of Baumann and Ziegler in Freiburg, Baden. From 1899 to the present time, L.-- professor of pharmacology at the Leningrad Medical Institute, where he was the first in Russia to introduce practical exercises in pharmacology for students. Simultaneously, from 1900 to 1929, at the same institute he first taught a course in general therapy, and later physiotherapy. From 1906 to 1929, L. headed the academic department of the Leningrad Medical Institute, having a substantial influence on its development. He organized for the first time in Russia at the Leningrad Institute of Railway Engineers a department of hygiene of the atmosphere, which he held from 1921 to 1930. L.-- one of the founders of the Society of Russian Physiologists named after Sechenov and the "Russian Physiological Journal named after Sechenov", one of the editors of which he is now. He actively participated in the organization of a number of Pirogov congresses, international medical (Rome, Moscow, Paris) and many others. L.'s scientific research activity addresses important problems in the field of pathological physiology, experimental pharmacology, biological methods of standardization of medicinal substances and toxicology. For the first time, L. applied the method of direct calorimetry in a healthy state and during fever in humans. L.-- a major specialist in the field of pharmacology and toxicology of combat O.V.-- L.'s main works: "Heat production of a healthy person at relative rest" (dissertation, St. Petersburg, 1893); "Study of gas and heat exchange during fever" (together with P. Avrorov, Izv. Voen.-med. ak., vol. V, 1902); "The effect of alcohol on gas and heat exchange" (ibid., vol. XII-XIII, 1906); "Comparative assessment of the activity of testicular preparations by research on isolated organs" (together with M. Nikolaev, Leningr. med. zh., 1926, no. 4).
