SVERZHEVSKY Ludwig Iosifovich (born in 1867), director of the otorhinolaryngological clinic of the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute. Graduated from the medical faculty of Moscow University in 1893. As an intern at the Moscow propaedeutic clinic (1894), he wrote the experimental work "Morphological changes in the blood in bronchial asthma" (Medical Review, 1894, No. 14). This work at that time was one of the first in Russia in hematology; then during his assistantship period at the Warsaw Hospital Therapeutic Clinic, he defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Medicine "On the influence of toxins and antitoxins on the nitrogen and gas exchange in animals" (1900). Then he served as a zemstvo doctor in the Voronezh province, and as an outpatient doctor of the Moscow city government. After that, S. studied otorhinolaryngology for a number of years in the best foreign clinics. In 1903, he received the title of privat-docent in diseases of the ear, throat and nose at Moscow University. In 1911, he was elected professor at the Moscow Higher Women's Courses; from 1917, he headed the department of otorhinolaryngology at the 2nd MMI. S. is one of the outstanding Soviet otorhinolaryngologists of recent times. In the works of both S himself and those he supervised, the issues of interconnections between diseases of the ear, throat and nose and internal diseases, infectious diseases, etc. are widely covered. In his clinic, the rhinological method of treating diseases of the lacrimal passages was first developed in Russia. Also in his clinic, the otoneurological thought first emerged in the Union, which brought otorhinolaryngology to the highest level of its development in the direction of otorhinoneurosurgery. As a result, he created a school that gave the country a significant number of prominent specialists. A whole series of works is devoted to peacetime and wartime trauma in the field of the ear, throat and nose, anatomy and clinic of the paranasal sinuses, malignant neoplasms of the nose and nasopharynx, treatment of stenosis of the larynx and professional diseases of the upper respiratory tract and ear. Among his latest works, the application of surgical diathermy in otorhinolaryngology deserves attention. He has written 38 works in total.
