FRONSHTEIN Richard Mikhailovich (born 1882), a prominent urologist. In 1906 he received his medical degree and became an intern at the urology clinic of Moscow University. In 1911 he was elected assistant at the same clinic. In 1916, after defending his dissertation 'Vaccinotherapy and vaccinodiagnosis of gonorrheal diseases,' he received the degree of Doctor of Medicine. In 1917 he moved as an assistant to the hospital surgical clinic of Professor Martynov, where he was elected privat-docent. In 1922 he was elected professor of the urology department at the Higher Medical School in Moscow, and from 1923 he has been professor of the urology department and director of the clinic at the First Moscow Medical Institute. Additionally, since 1921 he has headed the department for male gonorrhea at the State Venereological Institute and serves as a consultant at a number of medical institutions. Founder and editor of the journal 'Urology' (M.-L., since 1925), member of the editorial board of several Soviet medical journals and two foreign ones ('Z. f. Urologie' and 'Z. f. urol. Chirurgie'), co-editor of the BME for the surgical section, member of the Scientific Medical Council, chairman of the Moscow Society of Urologists and the All-Russian Society of Urologists, founded on his initiative. Fronshtein's scientific works (about 100) are purely clinical in nature and are devoted to the symptomatology, clinic, diagnosis, and therapy of diseases of the urinary organs and male sex glands. One of Fronshtein's great merits is the wide propagation of the aseptic treatment method for gonorrheal diseases. A large monograph has been published (in collaboration with other authors) 'Operative Urology' (M.-L., 1934) and in collective textbooks he has written large sections on malignant neoplasms of the urinary organs, on the symptomatology and diagnosis of urological diseases. Fronshtein's main works: 'Gonorrhea and sexual disorders in men' (M., 1928), 'Chronic gonorrheal and paragonorrheal diseases of the sex glands' (Ulyanovsk, 1926), 'Disorders of male sexual activity' (M., 1929).
