Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)

Troyanov Alexey Alekseyevich (1849-1916), known surgeon. Son of a peasant. Graduated from Kazan University and the Military Medical Academy (1872). Initially worked as a zemstvo and railway doctor. In 1882, he defended his dissertation at the Military Medical Academy on the influence of extensive skin burns on the animal organism. This monograph is a major work by T., which for its time had very important significance and served as a reason for Prof. S. P. GRUD Kolomnin to invite T. to the position of assistant at the academy. With the transfer of hospitals to the jurisdiction of city government, T. took charge of the surgical department of the Obukhovskaya Hospital. A series of clinical works by T. shows his outstanding clinical abilities, but the focus of T.'s activities lies in his purely operative and hospital work. Toward the end of his life, T. was director of the Mariinsky Hospital, and here, along with surgical work, he devoted much time to administrative work and to hospital affairs in the city of Petrograd.
