Summary
Vasoligation is a surgical procedure involving the ligation of the vas deferens. It is performed to prevent communication between the testis and epididymis with the seminal vesicle, and is indicated for recurrent epididymitis based on chronic spermatocystitis and for prophylaxis of the healthy testis in cases of tuberculosis of the epididymis or testis on the opposite side.
Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
VASOLIGATION, operation of ligation of the vas deferens. For the purpose of V., a small incision is made in the skin of the scrotum below the inguinal ring, the vas deferens is isolated from the spermatic cord, ligated with one or two ligatures, cut, after which the skin is sutured. Steinach suggests performing V. between the testis and the head of the epididymis, since with this method it is possible to avoid damage to the blood vessels. V. is used in the Steinach rejuvenation operation and in cases where it is desirable to interrupt communication between the testis and epididymis on the one hand, and the seminal vesicle on the other. V. is indicated for recurrent epididymitis on the basis of chronic spermatocystitis and for the prophylaxis of the healthy testis in cases of tuberculosis of the epididymis or testis on the opposite side.
