Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
ALEXIA (from Greek a - negative particle, and lego - I read), a disorder of reading or understanding what is read. It is often combined with aphasia and agraphia. Pure alexia, without other speech disorders, is caused by a lesion in the left gyrus angularis. Right-sided hemianopsia is also not uncommon in this condition. See Agnosia and Asymbolia.
