BARYKIN, Vladimir Aleksandrovich, bacteriologist and epidemiologist. Born in 1879; graduated from the medical faculty of Kazan University in 1900; defended his dissertation at the Military Medical Academy; worked with I. G. Savchenko in Kazan, with I. I. Mechnikov in Paris, and with Bordet (J. Bordet) in Brussels. From 1910 he was an assistant professor at Kazan University. In 1912, elected to the chair of general pathology at Warsaw University, he was not confirmed by Minister Casso. From 1915 B. was a professor of microbiology first at the Don University, then at Moscow University, and additionally, from 1921, director of the State Scientific Microbiological Institute of the People's Commissariat for Health in Moscow. B. is the author of a number of bacteriological and epidemiological works on plague, typhoid, paratyphoid, cholera, Bekker's disease, anthrax, and others, as well as systematic experimental research on typhus. Being a consistent supporter of the physicochemical direction in immunology, B. develops in this plane the doctrine of immunity and infection. These include B.'s works on phagocytosis, on the avidity of immune sera and antigens, works on the methodology proposed by B. for determining the therapeutic strength of anti-diphtheria sera, and his theory of immunity as a function of the state of the body's colloids. Barykin is the author of the substantiation of a new chapter in the doctrine of antigens, which significantly expanded the understanding of antigen properties. Over 70 scientific works by B. have been published in Russian and foreign journals.
