BASIS, BASILAR (Latin basilaris), foundation, main. Basilar is a relatively recent term used in the same sense as basal (see), sometimes replacing it, but used much less frequently; examples: basilar membrane (membrana basilaris)—the primary membrane of the organ of Corti; basilar part of the occipital bone (pars basilaris); basilar meningitis (see Meningitis)—inflammation of the meninges of the base of the brain.
