Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)

CONSTELLATION (from Latin constellatio - combination of stars; in a more general sense - combination, arrangement, setup), a term introduced into modern constitutional theory by Kanne and Tendeloo (Kanne, Tendeloo), however in different senses. Kanne uses the term C. to refer to what J. Bauer and Tandler denote by the word 'condition' (see Conditional). Tendeloo, however, invests the term 'constellation' with the concept of the totality of all necessary factors for any action and the interaction of these factors among themselves, understanding C. as the correlational influence of all physical, physicochemical, chemical, and other properties that create the whole and form the basis of its functions under various conditions. According to Tendeloo, both the resistance of the organism and the nature of its reactions are determined by the constitution of the body, the so-called constellation (combination) of all the peculiarities of the whole at the moment we are considering it. In analyzing each individual case, one should determine this particular C., the special combination of all causal factors by which the disease is conditioned. The term 'constellation', as well as the broader concept proposed by Tendeloo - 'constellation pathology', have not received any significant dissemination, which is essentially correct, since they, without introducing anything new, complicate the already confused terminology of the doctrine of constitution.
