Astley Paston Cooper (1768-1841) was one of the most prominent English anatomists and surgeons of the first third of the 19th century. He made significant contributions to anatomy, hernia surgery, and military field surgery, with notable works on dislocations, fractures, and breast diseases.

Cooper Astley Paston (1768-1841), one of the most prominent English anatomists and surgeons of the first third of the 19th century. Cooper was a student of Hunter, with whom he received serious training in anatomy, and then in Paris he completed his surgical education under Desault and Chopart. In 1793 he took up the chair of anatomy, and then in 1800 that of surgery at Guy's Hospital (London). Cooper performed the first such serious operation as ligation of the common carotid artery. He gained fame among his contemporaries through his outstanding works on hernia anatomy, performing a series of successful operations. Cooper's further merits lay in developing issues of military field surgery, creating a whole school of students who applied their knowledge in this area at the Battle of Waterloo and other battles of that time. The most important works by Cooper: "On hernia" (L., 1804-07); "A treatise on dislocations and on fractures of the joints" (L., 1823); "Lectures on the principles and practice of surgery" (L., 1837); "The anatomy and diseases of the breast" (Philadelphia, 1845); together with B.
