Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)
DENTAL DRILL, a steel drill with fine sharp grooves, used for removing diseased parts of the tooth and preparing cavities for dental fillings. The dental drill is activated by a dental drill machine (see), being secured in the so-called head of the dental drill machine. Depending on the shape of the cutting part, dental drills are distinguished as spherical, conical, flame-shaped, wheel-shaped, reverse-conical, pear-shaped, barrel-shaped, cylindrical (fissure), spear-shaped, and other forms of dental drill. The sizes of dental drill heads range from pinpoint to that of a large pea, marked with corresponding numbers, with about 18 in total. The length of the dental drill shank together with the cutting surface, on average, equals 2-5 cm. BORDE, Jules (b. 1870), famous Belgian immunologist and bacteriologist, a student of Mechnikov, director of the Bacteriological Institute (Brussels), professor at the Free University of Belgium. For immunological and bacteriological works, he was awarded the international Nobel Prize, and from the French Academy of Sciences - the gold medal of his name. B. was the first to establish the physicochemical nature of serum immunity reactions, showed the mechanism of agglutination, hemolysis, precipitation, detoxification, etc., clarified the role and unity of alexine in immunity reactions, discovered, together with Gengou, the conglutination reaction, together with Gengou, the alexine fixation reaction, which served as a prototype of the Wassermann reaction. B. also developed his own 'adsorption' theory of immunity, gave impetus with his experiments to the physicochemical development of the doctrine of anaphylaxis, for which he proposed his own interpretation, created a special hypothesis of bacteriophagy, proposed his own theory of blood clotting, discovered and described, together with Gengou, a special bacillus as the causative agent of whooping cough, improved the method of obtaining cultures nite dans les maladies infectieuses', which appeared in 1920 and has now become a bibliographical rarity. Into Russian was translated the work of B. - 'Immunity, antigens and antibodies', M., 1928.
