GURLT, Ernst Julius (Ernst Julius Gurlt, 1825–99), German surgeon, professor at the University of Berlin. Gurlt's first significant work was devoted to changes in bones in rickets ("De ossium mutationibus rhachitide effectis", diss., Berolini, 1848). Gurlt's major merit lies in his numerous classic works on military field surgery, on which he acquired vast experience by participating as a field surgeon in all the numerous wars of his epoch (1848, 1864, 1866, 1870–71). His merits as a historian of surgery are even more significant. Gurlt's three-volume work "Geschichte der Chirurgie und ihrer Aus-ubung" (Berlin, 1898) remains to this day a fundamental text. Gurlt's principal works include: "Uber den Transport Schwerverwundeter u. Kranker im Kriege" (Berlin, 1859); "Militar-chirurgische Fragmente" (Berlin, 1864); "Ab-bildungen zur Krankenpflege im Felde" (Berlin, 1868); "Berichte uber die Fortschritte u. Leistungen auf dem Gebiete der Chirurgie"—a series of reports in Archiv f. klin. Chirurgie (1859–65). Gurlt actively participated as chief editor in the publication of the largest biographical reference work "Biographisches Lexikon der hervorra-genden Aerzte aller Zeiten und Volker" (B. I–VI, Wien–Lpz., 1884–88), was one of the first editors of Archiv fur klinische Chirurgie (from 1860) and one of the founders of the German Surgical Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Chirurgie).
