Summary

Hemirhachischisis is a form of congenital spinal cleft where the fissure affects only a portion of the spine rather than its entirety. This condition is not accompanied by a prolapse of the spinal cord and is synonymous with merorhachischisis.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

HEMIRHACHISCHISIS (from the Greek hemi- half, rhachis spine, and schizo to split), a variety of congenital spina bifida (see Rhachischisis), consisting in the fact that the cleft extends not to the entire spine, but only to a part of it; moreover, the cleft is not accompanied by prolapse of the spinal cord. Syn.: merorhachischisis.
