Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)

His, Wilhelm (born in 1863), German scientist, director of the I medical clinic at Charité (Berlin University), known for his works in the field of studying the development and physiological function of the heart's conduction system. The muscle-nerve bundle he discovered simultaneously but independently from the Englishman Kent in the interventricular septum of the heart is named after him. On this question, His wrote a series of works: "Contributions to Heart Innervation" (together with E. Romberg; Progress of Medicine, Vol. VIII, 1890); "The Development of the Heart Nerve System in Vertebrates" (Lpz., 1891); "On the Development of the Sympathetic in Vertebrates with Special Consideration of the Heart Ganglia" (Proceedings of the Anatomical Society at the Sixth Meeting in Vienna, p. 69, 1892); "Heart Muscle and Heart Ganglia, Remarks on the Lecture of Privy Councilor A. von Kölliker" (Vienna Medical Journal, Vol. XVII, 1894). Other works address the nature of gout and rheumatism. Among the most important of these are: "Studies on Gout Patients" (Proceedings of the Society of German Naturalists and Physicians, 1896, and Vienna Medical Journal, Vol. XIX, 1896); "Chronic Joint Rheumatism" (German Clinic, Vol. XI, 1904); "Gout and Rheumatism" (German Medical Weekly, 1909, No. 15), etc. For a number of years, His headed the radiology department at the Berlin Charité clinic, where he was the first to begin the treatment of internal diseases with radium. A number of his works are devoted to the history of medicine, the treatment of goiter with iodine, the study of the basic principles of homeopathy, etc. His school counts a number of major medical names.
