Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)

INTERPRETATION (in psychology), psychological interpretation of facts obtained by other sciences, but having some relation to psychology, or conversely, reinterpretation of psychological phenomena using data from related sciences. To the greatest extent, psychological interpretation occurs in relation to physiology and pedagogy. In such cases, it pursues two tasks: 1) physiological explanation of certain features in psychological phenomena and 2) explanation of principles of another science, the nature of which can be revealed when taking into account the regularities of psychology as a science of behavior. An example of the first case is the use of the physiological doctrine of dominance to explain certain aspects of attention and interest activity. The second case of interpretation as explanation is currently observed in the holistic study of higher nervous activity, when physiologist authors interpret facts of their science according to regularities established in psychology, such as the use by physiologists of structural principles developed in modern German Gestalt psychology.
