Kuhnt Hermann (Hermann Kuhnt, 1850-1927), a prominent German ophthalmologist. After working for some time in anatomy at Rostock soon after graduating from university, he then moved to Heidelberg to Becker, under whom he specialized in eye diseases (1876-80). In 1881, K. took up the newly established chair of eye diseases in Jena; in 1892 he moved to Königsberg and, after approximately 20 years, to Bonn. His name is associated with the question of radical surgical treatment of trachoma, such as common operations as extirpation of the lacrimal sac, corneal conjunctival plastic surgery, eyelid plastic surgery, and others. Kuhnt was one of the first ophthalmologists to cross the boundaries in operative work beyond pure ophthalmology and to include in the scope of competence of an eye physician such areas as operations on the paranasal sinuses. K. was the founder of one of the popular and flourishing ophthalmological journals—► 'Zeitschr. f. Augenheilkunde' (Berlin, from 1899). The most important monographic works by K.: 'Zur Kenntnis des Sehnerven und der Netzhaut, 1-Structur des Sehnerven' (Berlin, 1879); 'Beiträge zur operativen Augenheilkunde' (Jena, 1883); 'Vorschlag einer neuen Therapie bei gewissen Formen von Hornhautgeschwüren' (Wiesbaden, 1884); 'Über die entzündlichen Erkrankungen der Stirnhöhlen und ihre Folgezustände' (Wiesbaden, 1895).
