Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)
NEUGEBAUER father and son (Neugebauer), outstanding Warsaw gynecologists of the 19th century. N.-father (Ludwig Adolf, 1821–1890) was born in the Kalisz Governorate and received his medical education in Dorpat and Breslau. Upon completion, he engaged in medical practice in Kalisz. In 1857, he transferred to service at the Warsaw Medical-Surgical Academy as a professor of anatomy, but simultaneously lectured on obstetrics and gynecology until 1869. Subsequently, L. Neugebauer devoted himself to medical practice in the two latter specialties. L. Neugebauer was simultaneously a privatdozent, and later a professor at the Warsaw University. In addition to practical activity, N. devoted much time to scientific-literary work, primarily in the Polish language; he invented numerous instruments and proposed several operations and operative modifications (for example, the operation for prolapse of the uterus—colporrhaphia mediana). - N.-son (Franz Ludwigovich, 1856–1914) received his medical education at the Warsaw and Dorpat Universities, then specialized abroad for three years. N.-son possessed exceptional erudition. His works on spondylolisthesis and hermaphroditism (see) are especially well known ("Hermaphroditismus beim Menschen", Lpz., 1908), as well as his literary summaries on symphysiotomy, ectopic pregnancy, etc. A list of F. Neugebauer's works from 1882 to 1907 is contained in his book "Zur Lehre von der Zwillingsschwangerschaft mit heterotopen Sitz der Fruchte" (Lpz., 1907).
