OGNEV Ivan Frolovich (1855-1928), histologist, professor at Moscow University (1st MSU). After graduating from the medical faculty of Moscow University, he remained at the department of histology to prepare for a professorship under the famous histologist A. I. Babukhin, founder of this department at Moscow University. After defending his dissertation, he received the position of prosector and in the last years of Babukhin's life, he conducted all the teaching. After Babukhin's death, he headed the department, which he held until 1914, when he was dismissed by order of Minister Kasso. After the February Revolution, O. again returned to the histological institute, of which he remained director until 1924, when he retired, but maintained his connection with the institute as long as his strength and health allowed him to work. Among Ognev's numerous works, the following are particularly significant. Original works, of which the most outstanding are: 'Histological Development of the Retina' (dissertation, M., 1884); a general outline of the doctrine of the structure of electric organs, published in the Russian Archive of Pathology and Clinical Medicine for 1896; the monumental work 'Course of Normal Histology' (vols. I-II, M., 1903-13), containing numerous literary materials and serving not only as a detailed textbook but also as an excellent reference book. Volume I was published in two editions (1903 and 1908), vol. III remained in manuscript. The first two volumes in revised and abridged form were republished in 1925 (M.-L.). In the last years of his activity, Ognev actively participated in the implementation of higher women's education and from the very beginning taught a course in histology at the G'erie courses, which were later transformed into the Higher Women's Courses and then into the 2nd MSU. O.'s laboratory was always full of young women working under his direction, who produced a number of valuable works. Among Ognev's numerous students, a number of people hold professorial chairs (L.
