Historical document, translated for reference. It reflects medical knowledge of the 1920s–30s and is not medical advice.
Summary
Oxycompounds are organic compounds containing the hydroxyl group OH, including alcohols, oxyacids, phenols, carbohydrates, and other substances with this functional group. These compounds are found in both plant and animal life and participate in metabolic processes.
Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
OXYCOMPOUNDS, organic compounds containing the hydroxyl group OH; therefore, alcohols, oxyacids (alcohol acids), phenols, carbohydrates, and other compounds with the hydroxyl group OH belong to O. They are found in the plant and animal world and participate in the metabolism of organisms. Oxyacids can be formed in the body as a result of deamination of amino acids and oxidation of fatty acids; phenols are also formed from proteins; the triatomic alcohol glycerol is a component of fats and oils. Monatomic alcohols in the form of esters are widespread in the plant world and are also found in animals. Polyatomic alcohols—mannitol, dulcitol, sorbitol—are formed during the reduction of hexoses belonging to the group of oxy-oxo compounds. Many medicinal substances (adrenaline, salvarsan, resorcinol, morphine, quinine, salicylic acid, etc.) also belong to the number of oxy compounds, as do many dyes and other natural and synthetic organic substances.
