TSEGE-MANTEIFEL Werner Hermannovich (1857-1926); surgeon; received his education at the medical faculty of the Dorpat (Yuryev) University, where he first served as a docent in urology, and then as a professor of the hospital surgical clinic until 1905, and from 1905 to 1917 of the faculty clinic. Possessing excellent theoretical preparation, T.-M. was a first-class technician of his time. In the field of scientific research, he earned an honorable place with his works on the pathogenesis of gangrene. The works of T.-M. have not lost their significance to this day. T.-M. was one of the first in Russia to develop the question of stomach resection operations and provided a review of 12 cases of stomach resection—an exceptional material for that time. He deserves credit for introducing rubber gloves in operations in Russia. His works on the question of ileus are no less valuable. In the field of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, T.-M. was a brilliant diagnostician. During the Russo-Japanese War, he worked in institutions of the Red Cross, paying main attention to issues of skull and vessel injuries. On the latter question, he wrote a work in German and Russian languages. During the imperialist war, he headed the institutions of the Red Cross on the Western Front. He presented the results of his observations during this war in the form of a guide to field surgery, which enjoys great popularity among surgeons. As a professor, physician, and person, he enjoyed exceptional respect and popularity.
