TSARSKOYE SELO, at the beginning of the 18th century, a Finnish village Saari Mojs («upper manor»), later Saranskoye selo, renamed in 1808 to Tsarskoye Selo, now a district city of the Leningrad region (23 km south of Leningrad). Population - about 25,000 people. Tsarskoye Selo is one of the healthiest areas near Leningrad. Transportation by railway. Climatic conditions: average air temperature 4.17°C. Prevailing winds are southern and south-western. The city lies on an elevated plateau. The highest point (the old palace) is at an altitude of about 75 m above sea level. The city has wide straight streets with villas and dachas, paved and electrically lit. Telephone communication, water supply, sewerage. The elevated position of the area, the magnificent park covering 723 hectares, known for its artistic boulevards, excellent key drinking water (Orlovsky springs), and radioactivity of the soil have created favorable conditions for establishing in Tsarskoye Selo institutions for rest and treatment. Among the permanent institutions, besides a hospital, there is a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients, school, preschool and tuberculosis sanatoriums, a school-sanatorium for tuberculosis patients at the tuberculosis dispensary, a rest house at the school sanatorium, and others; it should be noted two rest houses for the section of scientific workers. In recent years, Glavnauka has organized rest homes in the palace building.
