ZAGVERI, climate-balneological resort in Georgia, at an altitude of 1,020 m above sea level, at 41°51' north latitude and 43°27' east longitude, 14 km from Borzhomi, near the station of the same name on the Borzhomi-Bakuriani railway branch, in the valley of the Black River, surrounded on all sides by mountain slopes densely covered with forest, but leaving a wide horizon open. Average annual air temperature 3.7°C, relative humidity 77%, annual precipitation 578 mm. Climate, conditions of Z. due to the protection of the area are favorable. The therapeutic means of the resort are the mountain moderately humid climate and carbonic-acid-ferrous drinking sources of low mineralization (0.45 g per 1 liter), but with a high content of active iron (12-25 mg per 1 liter) with a flow of 20,000 liters. Indicated for treatment at Z. are: compensated and subcompensated closed forms of tuberculosis of the lungs, diseases of the respiratory organs of non-tuberculous nature, chronic malaria, anemia and rickets. Season from May 15 to October 1. The resort is still insufficiently developed. In Z. there operates the Kurupra sanatorium, polyclinic, air solarium with a physical education area and a number of departmental rest houses with a total of about 600 beds. In the plan of the second five-year plan: construction of a sanatorium for 200 beds, implementation of capture works, water supply, sewerage, roads, park works, etc. ZANGEMEISTER Wilhelm (Wilhelm Zangemeister, 1871-1930), prominent gynecologist of the early 20th century; received medical education in Heidelberg, Göttingen and Berlin; specialized in Berlin with Olshausen, with Zweifel in Leipzig and with Winter in Königsberg. From 1910 to 1925 professor in Marburg, from 1925 until his death in Königsberg. Among his numerous works (172), Z.'s works on toxicoses and eclampsia are particularly important. These works greatly contributed to the expansion of the principles of eclampsia prevention ('Die Lehre von der Eklampsie', Leipzig, 1926; Russian ed.-Moscow, 1928). Among other works, it is necessary to mention the work on postpartum infection (Russian translation: 'Bacteriological research in application to the diagnosis and prognosis of puerperal fever', M., 1911) and a good textbook of obstetrics ('Lehrbuch der Geburtshilfe', Lpz., 1926).
